چکیده

This work presents a first approach towards the development of a cost-effective enzymatic paper-based glucose/O2 microfluidic fuel cell in which fluid transport is based on capillary action. A first fuel cell configuration consists of a Y-shaped paper device with the fuel and the oxidant flowing in parallel over carbon paper electrodes modified with bioelectrocatalytic enzymes. The anode consists of a ferrocenium-based polyethyleneimine polymer linked to glucose oxidase (GOx/Fc-C6-LPEI), while the cathode contains a mixture of laccase, anthracene-modified multiwall carbon nanotubes, and tetrabutylammonium bromide-modified Nafion (MWCNTs/laccase/TBAB-Nafion). Subsequently, the Y-shaped configuration is improved to use a single solution containing both, the anolyte and the catholyte. Thus, the electrolytes pHs of the fuel and the oxidant solutions are adapted to an intermediate pH of 5.5. Finally, the fuel cell is run with this single solution obtaining a maximum open circuit of 0.55 ± 0.04 V and a maximum current and power density of 225 ± 17 μA cm and 24 ± 5 μW cm, respectively. Hence, a power source closer to a commercial application (similar to conventional lateral flow test strips) is developed and successfully operated. This system can be used to supply the energy required to power microelectronics demanding low power consumption.

Dynamic Response Analysis of the Planar and Tubular Solid Oxide Fuel Cells to the Inlet Air Mass Flow Rate Variation

The purpose of present study is to investigate the dynamic response of two conventional types of solid oxide fuel cells to the inlet air mass flow rate variation. A dynamic compartmental model based on CFD principles is developed for two typical planar and tubular SOFC designs. The model accounts for transport processes (heat and mass transfer), diffusion processes, electrochemical processes, a...

Experimental Investigation of Asymmetry of Vortex Flow Over Single Delta Wings

It is generally believed that, on slender delta wings, there is a critical state at which strong asymmetric vortices are found along the leading edge on the lee-side of the delta wing. These asymmetric vortices can lead to high lateral forces even when slender delta wing is at the zero angle of yaw. Some experimental studies reported recently, cast considerable doubt as to the validity of the a...

Hydraulic Network Modeling to Analyze Stream Flow Effectiveness on Heat Transfer Performance of Shell and Tube Heat Exchangers

In this article, stream flow effectivness is based on hydraulic network studied in the shell-side of a shell and tube heat exchange as a case study. For an appropriate heat exchangers rating design to meet a specified duty, it's better to consider each stream flow separately. Using the hydraulic network principals, a set of the correlations for calculating different stream flow rates in the cro...
